When I was in school I loved doing the simple black and white designs. When we had to go to full color I was not ready! Thankfully I got over that!
So many elements go into a great design. First you have to listen to the client and find out what they are thinking‚ what they like‚ what they don’t like. Then I research‚ I look to see what other designers are doing‚ what other companies in that industry are doing to promote themselves. I work with type to find the right font that works with the product I am promoting. A flowery script type doesn’t work that well for trucks. A big‚ bold‚ clunky type not so great for dance. Of course there are always exceptions! It’s important that the images used fit the product like the type does. You have to make sure that the colors of the image work with the colors used in the design. All the elements matter. Next I sist down with my pencil & tracing paper and start doing thumbnails. Little sketches of ideas where all the elements are in place. Even I who have been doing this for a LONG time am amazed that from that little sketch I can get the basics of the design down.
