When you are a small business there is always someone who does it cheaper. How do you compete?
In a LinkedIn email‚ I recently received there was a post from Inc. about “Interior Design Finally Does Digital” and how that was disrupting the interior design industry. New companies such as Houzz‚ Homepolish‚ and Hutch are offering interior design services online that they say are‚ “quicker‚ more affordable‚ and more convenient for customers”. What I got out of the post is why it is more important than ever to define why you do what you do‚ what you do and who you do it for. It has never been more important to define how you stand out. And now you also have to tell what you have to offer that a digital service doesn’t.
You are probably saying to yourself that what I offer can never be done by a digital service. The personal service you provide‚ getting to know your clients‚ who they are‚ what they like‚ what they dislike‚ basically what is going to make them happy with their home. How do you let potential clients know that you offer so much more than a digital service could ever offer?
You must define why you are an interior designer. It’s your story on why you got into this field. Why you love it and how that love of interior design benefits your clients. Next‚ define what you do‚ I’m sure that it is more than just pick out components that work together. For my web design clients‚ I’ve found that mostly they don’t know what to do or where to start. I’m guessing that interior design is a lot like that‚ there are those that know what style they like and can tell you what they want and then there are the people that have no idea. Some of the ones who know what they like will be the ones who go digital. Some will still want personal help. If your story is compelling and they like what they see they call you to learn more before and choose you?
Once you’ve defined why you use it everywhere! When you meet new people‚ in your marketing‚ when you speak and especially on your website. Your website is working around the clock telling people who you are and why to hire you. Make sure that it is doing the job. Like some of your clients‚ you don’t know where to start I can help!
There are plenty of digital‚ DIY options to create your website I compete by offering more than the design or technical help. I create websites that make people say “I want to work with you”! You need so much more than a good looking site with nice pictures.
