I’m not really a writer‚ but I’ve grown to enjoy it some. “Write like you talk”‚ words of wisdom from Stella Orange that helped me just do it. So I do. But what to say is still an issue for me. I haven’t been able to get a backup of written blogs to use when I just don’t have the time or don’t have an idea. I need a good idea of what to write then I write it. I get ideas from working with clients‚ or something I heard or read and I write from that.
So last night I was reading an email from a week ago written by Tara Gentile‚ a business coach that I follow. Tara put into words what I’m always trying to say about what I do for my clients with their websites. She calls it “Positioning” here’s Tara’s explanation of “Positioning” is‚
“Positioning is where your business sits in the market. It’s the stories that your customers tell about your business. It’s the message that you put out. It’s how you do what you do differently. It’s the price you set‚ it’s the packages or offers that you make‚ it’s how you show up in the market‚ and all those things come together to give you your positioning. In other words‚ where you sit in the market.”

I read this and thought to myself I need to tell my clients this with the tag “use this information on your website!”
To grow your business‚ you need to know how you position your business in the market. To use your site to it’s best advantage‚ you need to put this information on your website! Most website I see and honestly most that I’ve done in the past just look good and have basic information plus what many think is the main reason for a website CONTACT INFORMATION. Why did I do websites like in the past? Because that was the information that people gave me. Even when I would go back to them and say‚ “you need to say more here”‚ people would just get stuck in the “I don’t know what to write” vortex‚ spinning round and round looking at a page waiting for great copy to appear magically. No magic is going to solve this problem but using “positioning” as the basis for your text could come pretty close. Where does your business sit on the market? What do you do? That’s what we are talking about here. So be clear on what you do‚ without that you can’t get your message right. I do this‚ that‚ and the other thing does not create a strong message to attract those clients that need you. Defining what you do and how you do it differently and how you’re customers benefit from it is key to how you show up in the market. How you stand out from your competition‚ how you get them to hire you instead of the other guy. I know that many websites out the are from companies that know this and practice this in their business but don’t put this information on their websites. They know how to talk to prospective clients and tell them how they can help and how their way is better‚ but they writing it down to put into their website is hard and they just don’t do it.
Whether custom or theme based many people and web developers just follow what they see elsewhere‚ Home‚ About‚ Services‚ Contact. They May add fancy effects and useful options like an online scheduler but without using what they’ve learned from positioning their business and putting that into their website their site it is just another online brochure or a place to put your contact information. Let’s face it no one ever hired someone (I think) because they could schedule an appointment online. There had to be the information on why they should hire that person‚ how will what they do benefit me and my business? You May be saying to yourself‚ “I’ll hire a writer” but unless you know what to tell them they are going to write the basic website copy. So please when you are looking at your web site evaluate what is your site doing for your business? Is it telling the visitor that you are the best person/company to solve their problem? You know that’s what people are looking for when they come to your site. If not what’s keeping them from moving on to your competitor? Think about it and take action.
So when you looked at your site and see that it is not doing the job of positioning you in the market as the best at what you do and you are not happy about it. You realize that you are wasting an amazing marketing tool that works for your business 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Want to talk about how I can help you get it right and create a website that makes prospective clients say “I want to work with you!”. Contact me today and set up a free consultation‚ I love what I do and how I do it now that I’ve learned what matters most. I have to say my clients love it too.
